ITB Bioasphalt Overlay Test from Glycerine Pitch Waste

The ITB Research and Community Service Institute (LPPM) research team carried out a bio-asphalt overlay test activity based on glycerine pitch (GP) waste in the ITB Jatinangor Campus area on Wednesday (23/08/2023). This overlay test activity is an implementation of GP waste utilization research funded by the Palm Oil Plantation Management Agency (BPDPKS) since 2020.

Dr. Eng. Ir. Jenny Rizkiana from the Bioenergy and Chemurgy Engineering Study Program led this research which was supported by a number of ITB lecturers and the Bandung State Polytechnic (Polban) who carried out intensive research related to the use of waste which is one of the big problems in the oleochemical industry because the number continues to increase along with the growth of the biodiesel industry and also categorized as B3 waste. Before carrying out the overlay test, the research team had ensured that there were no dangerous substances contained in GP so that it was safe to apply to the environment.

“Today we are carrying out a full field test of research on the use of glycerine pitch waste from the oleochemical industry. “We use this waste as an extender or partial replacement for oil asphalt for asphalt mixtures,” explained Dr. Atmy Verani Rouly Sihombing, member of the research team who is also a teaching staff at Bandung State Polytechnic.

The implementation of this overlay test was witnessed by the Chairman of the Indonesian Oleochemical Producers Association (APOLIN) Norman Fajar Wibowo representing the oleochemical industry and Dr. Tatang Hernas Soerawidjaja and Prof. Dr. Udin Hasanudin representing the BPDPKS Research and Development Committee (Komlitbang).

“GP, which has been considered B3 waste, we are trying to find out how to use it so that this material does not always have to be thrown away but can also be utilized and increase its added value, especially from the results of the toxicology tests carried out, no substances were found that are harmful to the environment,” he said. Norman.

On the same occasion, the previous Chair of APOLIN, Rapolo Hutabarat, who was also present, told about the beginning of this research pioneering.
