Department of Bioenergy Engineering and Chemurgy Holds Research Workshop with ESDM and IKABI

Indonesia has enormous potential in the development of the biofuel (BBN) and bioenergy industries, because it is a country with a large area, relatively fertile land, and the largest biodiversity in the world. In order for this extraordinary potential to be utilized as much as possible in the development of the bioenergy industry in accordance with the government’s plans and policies to achieve the net zero emission target by 2060, it is necessary to develop technologies and strategies to utilize plant-based resources. through research and development efforts.

Recent changes in national research management policies have made technical ministries no longer oversee technology R&D institutions in their fields, because all these institutions have been transferred to the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN). In order for research in the field of bioenergy to be in harmony with supporting the implementation of policies and planning for the development of the national bioenergy industry and the development of its resources, it is deemed very necessary to have formulations on technologies that should become targets to be developed through research that is also directed, planned. , and well implemented; This ranges from selected vegetable source cultivation technologies to technologies for processing and exploiting the crop.

Based on the above ideas, the Indonesian Association of Bioenergy Experts (IKABI) in collaboration with the Directorate of Bioenergy, the Directorate General of New Renewable Energy and Energy Conservation, the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (KESDM) and the Department of Bioenergy and Chemurgy Engineering, FTI ITB, held a workshop to gather opinions. relevant opinions and then compose the formulations referred to above on Friday 18 March 2022 at Hotel Bandung Giri Gahana, Jatinangor.

The theme of the workshop is “Preparing the Technical Foundation for the Development of the Indonesian Bioenergy Industry in order to achieve the target of net zero emission in 2060”. The workshop will discuss 4 (four) topics/big research groups that are deemed necessary to develop Indonesia’s bioenergy industry in the future, namely:

  1. Biofuel research from fat oil
  2. Biofuel and Bioenergy Research from lignocellulosic and seaweed
  3. Biofuel researches for power generation with fuel cells
  4. Biofuel research via microalgae cultivation

The results of the workshop are in the form of formulations on R&D activities that need to be carried out and funded for the development of the bioenergy industry in carrying out the energy transition towards the target of net zero emission in 2060.
